Benn Lessard and Carver Darren Joseph
On the spot news! · 15th April 2010
Klahoose CCP
The Klahoose Memorial Pole Project is nearing completion and the beautifully carved western red cedar will be returning to the Toba valley for its final preparation.

Carver, Darren Joseph has been working throughout the cold winter months to see the project completed. Even though Darren and his fiancé and manager Robbi Wilson went through a loss in the family, they pushed on and sacrificed to make the memorial pole the success that it is.
Robbi has been instrumental in assisting with the planning and organizing of the project and Darren’s skills and persistence are evident in the fine traditional work that is displayed in the pole.

Another portion of the project is the endless volunteering of Klahoose Forestry Engineer, Benn Lessard. He has been the liaison for the project and has been a great help organizing travel arraignments, community input and all the fine details. Ben’s vision and enthusiasm has been well received.

Klahoose Chief Ken Brown was the driving force to start this project. Ken met with band member Norman Harry Sr. in early 2009 to get the ball rolling and it has been picking up speed ever since. The other Klahoose council members, Kathy Francis, Jessie Louie and Wayne Pielle continue to show unwavering support for this initiative.

Behind the scenes, Klahoose members have been part of the planning process and continue to shine. Band Administrator, Bev Hills and the Klahoose Staff have played a huge part in this project.
Plutonic Power and Peter Kiewit & Sons Construction have been a financial and moral boon as they have contributed funds, infrastructure with little fanfare and promotion. Ledcor Construction has made significant contributions as well through Multipurpose Building site Superintendant, Paul Halverson.

The Memorial Pole will be taking to trip by barge to IR# 1 in the Toba Valley late April where the remaining work on the Pole will be completed. Look for more updates on the raising ceremony soon.
