Klahoose First Nation
The sun is a welcomed friend on the construction crews of the new Klahoose Multi-Purpose building. After the long winter months of dedication to the project, the results are starting to show.
From the Squirrel Cove store you can clearly see the massive beams competing with the trees in the skyline.
The main rafters are in place and now the final roof is being installed. Windows are near completion and walls are being erected to finish the various rooms inside. Stained cedar posts and laminated beams enclose the main hall area. The next wave of construction will feature mechanical and electrical implementation.
After a brief tour, one can see the bright possibilities becoming a reality. Rumours of weddings, gatherings and celebrations are on the minds of the gazing onlookers who witness the transformation of the Klahoose Nation. Visiting the site will move you by the beauty of the landscape and the spirit of the work that is being completed.
When the official opening commences at the end of the summer, not a dry eye will be in the house.
For site tours see the Safety Officers or Site Superintendant at the Ledcor Office on site.
Klahoose Wood part of the Project
Since September 2009, a milling program has been under way making lumber from wood delivered from the Klahoose traditional Territory in Toba Inlet. Over the winter months the lumber products have been used for various renovation projects around the Klahoose IR#7.
Recently the milling crews have been making custom cuts specifically for products that will be included in the new Klahoose Multi-Purpose Building. These include siding, decking, interior finishing and window sills. These services will save the project and the band thousands of dollars and will help employment and economy on our local and band levels.
Plans are in the works to expand the milling program and use it as an educational and employment opportunity for years to come.
Klahoose Administrator, Bev Hills continues to build these programs with support of Klahoose Chief and Council.
