Klahoose Fisheries
After a disappointing Sockeye run last summer and years prior, Klahoose members were wondering if they would ever see another harvest again.
This summer changed that concern into a positive experience with the arrival of two catches. These took place within a month with the total of 2000 pieces per catch.
The first catch landed in mid July with the help of Klahoose member, Ron Francis and Island Sea Farms. The Klahoose members at IR# 7 in squirrel Cove were ecstatic about the Food Fish they received.
“I never thought we would see Sockeye again.” said band member, Marlene Hanuse.
The second catch landed at the dock at Lund, B.C. on Sunday, August 14th to a waiting urban Klahoose crowd who were all smiles. The large seine boat from Campbell River loaded trucks, totes and laundry baskets to the brim with fresh caught Sockeye. Fisheries Officer, Ken Hanuse, was organizing the events and was running around keeping an eye on the distribution and helping everyone out. Most of the members elect to jar, freeze or smoke their share to prepare for the upcoming winter.
Chief Ken Brown, the Klahoose administration and the Klahoose Fisheries Department worked hard to ensure Klahoose was allotted a share of the sockeye by securing the services of neighbouring First Nations.
Ken Hanuse makes every attempt to contact band members so they can receive their share but cannot always fulfill everyone’s needs. The department strongly recommends membership to contact the band so you can be counted in for your allotment.
