The old logging camp is getting a makeover.

New trailers to house and feed the men and women, freshly-drilled wells, and a sprucing up of the old A-frame hall is all for the camp's new tenants: Kiewit contracting, the builders of Plutonic Power Corporation's Toba-Montrose Project.

Sentinel like mountains guard the entrance to the Toba Valley, traditional territory and once home to the Klahoose First Nation.

As members of the Klahoose First Nation look east toward the Toba Valley from their current community located in Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island, one thing remains constant.

The Toba Valley sustained the Klahoose for thousands of years and their Nation prospered. An environmental event prompted the Klahoose to move in the late 1800’s to where they are today which in many ways resulted in a down turn in their once thriving and self sustaining community.

The Toba Valley is now re-emerging as a sustaining force in the future of the Klahoose First Nation.

By hosting the first and possibly largest Green Energy hydro project in North America, The Toba Valley is once again providing a bright future to the Klahoose First Nation and a means to honor the Nation's proud past.

Ken Brown, chief of the Klahoose First Nation, is criticizing the New Democratic Party (NDP) for calling for a moratorium on private power projects. "What whiz kid in the NDP brain trust came up with the idea of opposing sustainable run-of-river, green power developments?" Brown asked. "Their extensive research did not include getting a first nations' perspective on the situation or evaluating the effect of first nation votes on election night."

“All they did was perpetuate more myths. It was appalling and there was no reference to First Nations,” chief Brown told the Mirror on Friday. “Ultimately, they (NDP) are trying to compromise our economic opportunities.”
